ATV Trail

The mission of the Rock Run Recreation Area is quite simple:

  • Develop a first-class multi-use, motorized recreation area
  • Create an economic “sparkplug” for
  • Cambria and Clearfield Counties
  • Encourage environmental stewardship
  • Promote responsible trail riding

What We're About

Rock Run Recreation Area is a first-class, multi-use motorized recreation area located in northern Cambria and southern Clearfield Counties, Pennsylvania.

Responsible trail riding and environmental stewardship are essential parts of recreational riding. Rock Run Recreation Area provides over 50 miles of trails, with terrain suited to match all skill levels.

The previous property owner of the Rock Run parcel was a coal company. Representatives from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, State Representative Gary Haluska, and various legal parties, negotiated beginning in October 2002 to bring the property into the ownership of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority.

The Authority received an initial 2-million dollar grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Snowmobile /ATV Fund. This grant was matched with 2-million dollars of donated property value to secure the 6,000 acre property. The Authority took ownership officially in June 2003.

The Rock Run Advisory Board is an adjunct non-profit entity, charged with the development of the park. The board was assembled in March of 2004 and continues to work with the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority and state funding agencies. The following summarizes the progress of the project to date.

Environmental Awareness

The ponds at Ruck Run are vertical flow limestone systems designed to treat AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) discharges. The purpose of these systems is to improve the water quality in these discharges.

The treatment systems remove metals such as iron, aluminum, and manganese from the water. These metals are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Please be considerate when you are on our property and stay away from the treatment ponds. Everybody needs clean water and we all live downstream.

The passive treatment systems replace chemical treatment systems that were operated by K&J Coal Company, Inc. Click here to learn more about the water treatment project at the Hedin Environmental corporate Web site.

Tread Lightly!, Inc. is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to proactively protect recreation access and opportunities in the outdoors through education and stewardship initiatives. Learn more at www.treadlightly.org Tread Lightly Image
